Who is protected? Life and health insurance guaranty associations cover individual policyholders and their beneficiaries; typically, persons protected by certificates of insurance issued under policies of group life, group health insurance, disability insurance, annuity contracts and contracts supplemental to life and disability insurance policies, are also covered. Annuities that are directly issued to and owned by individuals, or annuities that directly guarantee benefits to individuals by the insurer are generally covered. What are known as "unallocated" annuities are not covered. Coverage is limited to policy holders and beneficiaries who are live human beings.
